Slide 15 - These three pictures are all of a little girl called Josie.

These three pictures are all of a little girl called Josie. Picture 1 shows Josie when first seen by the health worker; she had moderate to severe dehydration, as evidenced by the pinched-up skin fold on her abdomen. Picture 2 shows Josie receiving ORS solution by cup and spoon from her mother. In picture 3 we see Josie the next day; she is well hydrated and, though still receiving ORS because of continuing diarrhoea, is also taking some food. Her mother assisted in the administration of oral fluids in the health centre, providing health workers with an opportunity to advise her on infant feeding practices. Indeed, oral rehydration therapy has been shown to have a beneficial long-term nutritional effect, resulting in better weight' gain, when a nutritional message is given along with it.
