How to give oral fluids - slide 13 - Diarrhoea Management

Slide 13
How to give oral fluids

(Recording continues)

This mother is giving her child oral rehydration fluid from his feeding both. She feeds him milk from the bottle, so he is already used to drinking from it.

Q. Do you think this is a good way to give oral fluids?

A. No, this is hot a good way for a child to drink - either milk or oral rehydration fluids. Bottles are difficult to keep clean, and dirty bottles can cause repeated attacks of diarrhoea. Probably this bottle caused this child's diarrhoea in the first place. Also, it is difficult to control the speed at which a child drinks from a bottle. Try to find another way to give the baby his fluids. Only use a bottle if all other methods fail, and if the baby refuses to take the fluid any other way.
