Slide 9 - These are the principles of oral rehydration therapy.

These are the principles of oral rehydration therapy: (1) there is a need to correct the existing water and electrolyte deficits - i.e., rehydration, ,and ORS is ideal for this purpose; (2) the continuing losses need to be replaced - i.e., maintenance, which can also be done using ORS; while (3) the normal daily fluid needs are met through continued breast feeding or the administration of plain water or other liquids.
