Table: Degree of dehydration and rehydration fluid.

This shows a simplified scheme for deciding how much fluid to give according to weight and degree of dehydration, based on the same principles as the Exercise in="diarrhoea-management-12.htm" target="_blank"> Slide 12.
<4 %

No visible dehydration. Extra fluids-water, fruit juices, soups, tea, milk or whatever the child drinks.

5%

Mild dehydration. 50 ml. ORS solution/kg. in 4-6 hours.

5-9%

Moderate dehydration. 75 ml. ORS solution/kg. in 4-6 hours.

10 or >10%

Severe dehydration. 100 ml. ORS solution/kg. in 4-6 hours. May need IV fluids.

While diarrhoea continues, give ORS solution by mouth in the same volume as the fluid lost in stools.
