This creates a high risk of cross contamination with pathogenic bacteria, particularly Campylobacter sp. which cause enteritis. Image from MB Skirrow.

Ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrine

Ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrine

This VIP latrine in Zimbabwe removes the excreta from the environment, is ventilated to remove the smell and is protected from flies. Smooth walls inside the latrine make it easier to clean. Hand washing facilities should be provided outside the latrine. When the pit of this latrine is full in 5 to 10 years a new one must be built. Image from C Lengeler.
